För Åland, i Östersjön

Det har blivit september men sommaren håller fortfarande sitt vakande öga över den norra delen av Tyskland. Hemma i Mariehamn inleds VM för obemannade segelbåtar vilket är väldigt coolt. Själv laddar jag för en sista dag inom BSPC-samarbetet där det även i dag ska handla om social- och hälsovård.

Det kan låta tradigt men är ändå viktigt. Arbetet i BSPC är Ålands i dag viktigaste plats när det gäller att ha inflytande på vad som händer i Östersjön. Vi är förvisso små men vårt inflytande är på riktigt. När vi sitter i mötesrummet med Ryssland, Polen, Sverige och många fler väger våra ord lika tungt som deras.

Just nu är det Rostock som gäller. Nästa år är det Lettland och sedan bär det av till Hamburg. Vi har under några intensiva dagar diskuterat antibiotika i djur. utsläpp från kryssningsfartyg, flyktingar, oroligheterna i Ukraina och mycket mer. De åländska förslagen kring hur man ska hantera dessa frågor gick i mångt och mycket hem. Det är som alltid här i världen kraften i idéerna som bär längre än mängden invånare.

Chairman,

We are all dependent of the wellness of the Baltic Sea. Water is life. We use our beloved Baltic for trade and pleasure and food. For the Åland Islands it is all that and even more. The Baltic Sea is for real our door to our neighbours. There are no other roads than those on water. We have no other borders than the water surrounding us.

The BSPC-cooperation is of highest importance for our island society. With you we can share our experiences and make you aware of our presence and need for a sound sea and a sustainable future. We are not as many as the rest of you but our views on the Baltic are at least as strong as yours.

From time to time we have had extensive discussions regarding ie the wording in the resolution from our conference. We have become good at finding compromises which is a strength. As in any families there will very rarely be totally unanimous how the future should be handled. We are all influential and have strong feelings about our common sea. As it should be.
From Åland we would like to emphasise the importance of the BSPC for the wellbeing of the Baltic Sea and its neighbours and all the people that are depending on our common Baltic. At this conference we are in the position to make a difference for real. We can influence environmental policies, we can address current topics and challenges. When people meet, like right now in Rostock, contacts will be made which will make it easier to achieve cultural and educational exchange in the region. By working together and find common grounds we can spread hope around the Baltic Sea and that is at the end of the day why we are here and what we do. We are building a future that will inspire our people.

We are the Baltic Family and we must never forget that.
